May We Never Walk this Way Again
At the beach this week I’m reading a book about the life of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, named, Bonhoeffer – pastor, martyr, prophet, spy, by Eric Metaxas. Though it is much more academic that I had intended to read, I am fascinated by how things transpired allowing Hitler to rain down so much sorrow on the Germans and get away for so long in the genicide of the Jews.
Martin Luther King once wrote “Everything Hitler did was legal.”
According to this book he is absolutely correct! Through the church, the government and the people at large, all became sheep being lead to slaughter, with so many never seeing the destruction of life and country that was in their midst. Some of the things he talks about I see in America today. Not that we are heading down the same path, but that but that it is possiblefor us to go down that path as a people.
Inge Karding is quoted in the book saying, “Among the public there spread the expectation that the salvation of the German people would now come from Hitler. But in the lectures we were told that salvation comes only from Jesus Christ. “
I don’t get into political debates. I’m not educated in that area enough to do it justice, nor do I feel that God has called me to do so. But the book Bonhoeffer is a wake up for me to be more vigilant in prayer and in knowing the Word.
